Rumbling around the aircraft circuit I have met many a knowledgeable spotter. Some are avid photographers but many are not. There thing is collecting tail numbers in a log book, their tool of choice is a scanner, not a camera. From this other vantage point I have found it interesting that eyebrows were raised when I would explain that my camera/lens set up could identify the airline of a jet flying at flight level 380 and above.

So, today on a lovely sunny and warm (yep 24 hours after a snowstorm) afternoon, I took some shots from my driveway. This time the camera was 90 degrees to the ground pointing into the heavens. Now although garbage quality, please bear in mind this was a bit of fun and also to demonstrate that I could indeed identify airlines at contrail heights with my lens.

How many can you identify?

Martin.

Hey Martin,

I have the same sort of experiences over my life. I actually hace a scanner and listen it to while BBQ'ng unstead of a radio station.
I used to collect tail numbers using the infamous JP Airline Fleets as my resource and reference.
I have now narrowed that down to just the aircraft I fly on. :)

I am going to take the first stab at your pics (which I just fugured out as well that yoiu can do this and will post a picture for you to try and guess).

1 - DC-9-15 -tough color scheme with the light however I am thinking Amerijet...
2 - Virgin A340
3- Iberia A340.

I look forward to your answers.....

Gman

Well I think your guess is as good as mine. Not sure about the first one, but the other two looks like Virgin and Iberia.

Martin.

Your images are very clear Andrew, but too far away for the most part to identify. Number 4 is MartinAir, that's an easy one.

Martin.

First one is hardest, but its an AA 763.

Second, UA 757 (easily tell by the blue bottom and 757 shape), and a lufthansa 747

Third, Delta 767-400ER (blue-red engines and raked wingtips on 767 body)

Forth, Easily recognizable as a Martinair MD11

Fifth, Continental 772 :)

And last, a Northwest 747 heading to DTW just south of Winnipeg.
