August 22, 2009 CHAA's Wings & Wheels Flyday

CHAA Flyday – Wings & Wheels Family Fun Day -- August 22, 2009

CHAA will be holding a Wings & Wheels Family Fun Day at our Tillsonburg Hangars on Saturday, August 22, 2009 from 9AM to 4PM.

This year, in addition to our fleet of Harvard Trainers, our vintage Tiger Moth and Yale, we are pleased to have on site the Russell Group’s Hurricane and Spitfire. In addition, there will be other aircraft, a large collection of classic cars and a static display of remote control aircraft.

Auctions Fundraisers will be held throughout this CHAA Flyday, along with food vendors, tours and demonstrations, selling of CHAA Stores items, special visitors, a children’s area, archival displays, media representation, our Dive Team display and much, much more.

Backseat Harvard rides will be available all day long. 2009 is the year to have your first, or second, or third..... Hope to see you there.

I'll be there too, with, you guessed it, JAM. Gonna skip Selfridge, what with Windsor, Waterloo, Brantford and Toronto in a space of 8 days. I do want to stay married!!

A good day at CHAA today, even though we had to dodge a few rain showers. Hurricane and Spitfire made it in around noon, but the Hurricane had hydraulic problems en route, and just put it down as soon as he go to Tillsonburg. Spitfire did a couple nice passes, and went up again later and did a few more nice passes. Harvards were up all day, doing lots of neat formation work. Had a good day for JAM too, with a lot of people sounding like they were coming to the open house on the 12th, as well as selling a few memberships and apparel.

Took some time to head to Tillsonburg this morning arriving about 08:40. Just a few minutes after I arrived the first flight of four Harvards went up with paying passengers.

I arrived in sunshine and caught a few decent takeoff shots.

While they went out for their flight I wandered the field and captured the CHAAs "new" Yale. Lookin good with just a bit more work needed including a prop.

Shortly after, the heaven's opened up for about 90 minutes but clearer weather returned and the yellow birds went back at it. Shortly after they recovered Ed Russell's Hurricane and Spitfire showed up. The Hurricane landed directly due to a hydralic issue and the Spitfire made a couple of nice passes. Of course the weather, which had been clear for 15-20 minutes while we waited clouded over about 2 minutes before the merlins arrived.

A few minutes later, Russell's Harvard showed up to round out the aircraft on display today.

All in all, not a bad day but as usual it seems, the weather was a pain. This has been just a brutal year for weather.

Cheers,
