Euro.cz: Canada interested in Czech fighter planes
ČTK |

13 October 2009

Prague, Oct 12 (CTK) - The Canadian Royal Air Force (RCAF) has voiced interest in the purchase of nine Czech L-159 light fighters for its aerobatics demonstration team Snowbirds, but the Czech Defence Ministry had not reacted for six months to it and only did so in August, the server Euro.cz writes Monday.

Ministry spokesman Andrej Cirtek said as the talks were in their initial stage, he could not elaborate.

The Czech Republic has been trying to sell 47 of the aircraft for years as the Czech military does not need them.

Canada has set aside an equivalent of two billion crowns for the renewal of Snowbirds. At the beginning it was considering extending the life span of the 35-year-old Canadian-made CT-114 Tutors, but later it came up with the idea of the purchase of L-159s, Euro.cz writes.

The Canadian authorities wanted to settle the affair by the beginning of the summer, but then they postponed the decision by six months, Euro.cz writes, but despite this, no one from the Czech Republic checked from the spring till August whether the information on Canada's interest was truthful.

Euro.cz writes that Martin Bartak, former deputy defence minister for strategic planning and now Defence Minister, did not dare or want to discuss the bid during the political turmoil following the March fall of Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek's government.

It was only in early August that Czech air force attache Jan Sykora in Washington flew to Prague to discuss the affair with Czech authorities.

Jan Fulik, a newly appointed deputy defence minister, confirmed in the second half of August that the Czech Republic was interested in the deal.

St.-John Williamson, vice president for business development and sales of Aero Vodochody, aircraft manufacturer, and Mike Mendoza, a special aide to the company's board, then prepared the documents for the talks with Bartak's Canadian opposite number Peter MacKey in Ottawa on September 19.

"As Canada is dealing with the question of a training plane for its air force, it is possible for the Czech L-159 to seek the bid. The Czech army could use the Canadian cargo planes C-17 for the transport of troops and materiel abroad," Cirtek said.

"The only thing we can reveal is the fact that the talks were conducted, while no agreements have been concluded," Martin Danko, public relations manager from the firm Penta, Aero's owner, said.

At first, the Czech military was to buy 72 L-159 Alcas, under a contract signed 1997. The military later said it would only keep 24 of them and the government decided in 2004 that it wanted to sell 47 aircraft.

I wonder how much of this is even being considered, since these are not in the CAF inventory. Sharp looking aircraft though! First flight was only in 1997, so it's a relatively new aircraft. Should be interesting to see what happens.

Hmmm very interesting indeed but like anything with any government involved it seems to be draping on like usual. Hope things pick up and we could see new Snowbirds soon :)

On a side note how does this impact the current BAE Hawk situation with NATO training if at all?

I'm on the fence about this. I wish they would stick with Canadian Built aircraft, but then I guess we'd only see Q400's or a Diamond formation of Twin-Otters lol.

Better than not having the Snowbirds I guess

Did/ do they still have 24 of them? or get attrition a/c? Now one was lost to a bird strike couple yrs ago. Think threy're a little pricey for our Gvt to swallow. Like AB; i'm on the fence too. Has anyone seen the "Patriots" jet team fly? What are they like? Could get used to them if they are louder n faster than Tudors  Just my 2 c's guys.

It sounds like the Snowbirds pilots past and present don't want the fighters. I'm seeing a lot of comments about how if its only a small group of the planes (9) maintenance cost will be too high and take too much time. Also the pilots are saying the conversion will be much longer and intense then normal tutor conversion.

Quote:
But Dan Dempsey, a former Snowbirds leader and author of a book on the demonstration team, questioned whether such a purchase would ever take place.

"One of the issues you always have with aerobatic teams is compatibility with other aircraft that you have within your inventory, because of maintenance and spare parts," Dempsey said. "If you take nine stand-alone aircraft of any kind and bring them into the country, you'd have a huge maintenance issue to start with, and you'd have a huge training issue."

He said the Czech proposal was "wishful thinking on someone's part."

Dempsey said it was his understanding that Canada's air force will continue to operate the Snowbirds' Tutors until 2020. In the meantime, it would search for a replacement aircraft.

2020 eh? I think JAM is going to have to wait for their bid on the CT-114 airframes for a bit lol.

Interesting..

I think you would see a much larger purchase of aircraft. Maybe 20 if it ever happened.

I don't think it would impact the Hawk training unless we bought all forty. This sounds to me like someone in the Gov sent out a feeler. They probably have sent out a proposal to many more companies / countries to see if the viability of such a purchase is worth it.

Anything new would be a great addition to our Forces. I think at this point in time our World reknown team can only fly in North America. It would be nice to see an aircraft that could go to RIAT and other world events. The French AF Team have been over here that last 2 years, the Red Arrows has been over many times including last year and the TBirds / Blues travel the world each year. It would be great if we could belly up to the bar as well.

As long as we do not go the way of the Chilian AF (Extra's) or the Brazilians with Pilatus aircraft. Not that there is anything wrong with either team just no where near as exciting as our Snowbirds.

My 2 cents...

G

Not knowing much about the business side, keeping turbine engines to me is important. I like the look of the Czech aircraft mentioned.

I have not ever seen the Red Arrows, but something the Sbirds have always been famous for IMO is graceful flight displays....I like the power and speed of the Blues or Tbirds, but this is our unique contribution....It would be important to me to ensure we can keep that part of the program.

I am a bit surprised this is even being talked about....(I am a bit behind the 8 ball), I thought heard the cost was just too high to do anything.

Hi guys,
This is my first post on SWOAB.
I happened to see the "Patriots" do a promo exhibition over the San Francisco Bay in August for the Sacremento Air Show. I was impressed by their formation, but they are only a four-ship team.
