From Kevin on ASB:
Quote:
All,
The dates for Thunder Over Michigan 2010 will be August 7th & 8th.
The theme will be "The Gathering of Fortresses and Legends.....The Final Mission".
We will update the web site soon but we wanted to let the ASB fans know right away about this historic B-17 Gathering and the salute to all veterans who flew and maintained this incredible bomber.
More to come....
Kevin

Could be another interesting year with that theme. If the line-up is as good as this years and the year before was I'll have to considering going down yet again!

From Mike on WIX.
Quote:
The battle will be on the main show line, and will include all the B-17s, Me-109, Mustangs and maybe more.

Hopefully if "909" shows up they'll bring along their B-24, P-51 and Me-262.

As our plans develop for the 2010 Thunder Over Michigan Air Show and “The Gathering of Fortresses and Legends” we are excited to report that 8th Air Force Historical Society’s 2010 annual reunion will be moving from Tucson, Arizona to Ypsilanti, Michigan to coincide with the Thunder Over Michigan Air Show.
In speaking with representatives from the 8th Air Force Historical Society, they stated that reunion is expected to have upwards of 350 attendees with possibly 100+ of them being 8th Air Force WWII veterans.
Thunder Over Michigan will be providing an area for the registered 8th Air Force WWII veterans to sign autographs, sell books, pictures, etc. and meet and greet with the public.
We hope that this will afford air show attendees a very rare and unique opportunity to interact with a significant number of these ‘American Heroes’!
More to come….
Thanks
Kevin

Wow thats awesome news! As long as they do provide a good place for the Vets to see the show and then interact with the crowds it could be a nice bonus. May have to try and get some artwork signed by the Vets. If I go to thunder this year though we HAVE to make sure we can make a meet up work. To often it gets dropped like the last 2 times I've went to thunder and even at the last wings and wheels. What do you guys think? how can we make sure that the meet ups happen?

I'm positive that Kevin and Mike will do everything possible to make these guests welcome. The flightline at TOM is huge now, with lots of space to the south barely used last year. It wont be as busy next year without a jet team anyway. There should be a nice size tent set up on the flightline for these people.

As far as meeting up, I haven't had much success with that either, especially at more distant shows. The usual problem is timing. Attempts are usually made to meet up early in the morning, but then people don't get there in time. You don't want to meet up too late in the morning, because by then, you've usually got your seat scoped out, and you don't want to lose it by meeting up somewhere. And after the show, most people try to leave a bit early to beat the crowds. Shows such as TOM are even harder to arrange, as you have all those intangibles such as traffic and border crossings. For TOM, I get there on Friday, and stay the week-end. I'm on the grounds by 0630 each day, but am mostly free after 0900, so I can meet up anytime after that.

I think that having JAM at most local Ontario shows could be used as a meeting place though. I met a few people last year at the trailer.

Yeah I have the same problem when trying to meet up with people. We'll have to try and work something out though. I wouldn't mind doing it after the show, I usually stick around to get pictures of the static's without as many people in them or to see any departures at a Sunday show. With the Horsemen at this one I wonder if we could set a group photo or something with them, at least that would get everyone together. Anyway it's still a long way out, we've got plenty of time to think of something.

We are very excited to announce, Thunder over Michigan 2010 will feature The Worlds Largest WWII Air & Ground Battle Reenactment. The battle will kick off with a Me-109 and Me-262 in formation, buzzing multiple German flak gun positions as their crews look on. Once the German fighters depart, the flak crews scramble to their guns as a formation of B-17s appear on their way to a distant target. A lone B-24 approaches pursued by the Me-262, as the Me-109 attempts to jump the B-17 formation in the distance. Once it looks like the Germans control the battle, multiple P-51s arrive to engage the Me-109 and Me-262 as American ground units arrive to engage the flak crews and other German ground units.

what does (parts) mean? A wing here, and wheel there?

Basically, you're right Tyssen. Both aircraft are under restoration, so I don't really know how much of each aircraft will be brought in. It would be nice if they can bring in the fuselage, but I kind of doubt it will be anything that large.

You can get info on both aircraft:

Desert Rat:

Champaign Lady:

BTW, TOM has always done great re-enactments, but this sounds like it's going to knock your socks off!!!
